Suspect charged with manslaughter in hit-run death of off-duty cop

A 59-year-old man was under the influence of drugs or alcoholwhen the car he was driving slammed into an off-duty Philadelphia police officer who was riding his motorcycle Sunday.

Louis John Vogwill was charged Monday with involuntary manslaughter, vehicular homicide and homicide by vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance for a crash that killed Officer Lamar Poole, an 18-year veteran of the department.

Poole, who wasassigned to the 12thDistrict,died Sunday at Aria-Torresdale Hospitalfrom injuries he sustained from the crash.

Police say both vehicles were crossing Roosevelt in opposite directions when Vogwill made a left turn, pulling in front Poole’s motorcycles.

Vogwill left the scene but was followed by a tow-truck driver that witnessed the accident.

Poole’s death was the second off-duty crash that killed an officer in August.
