On Saturday, June 24, iconic Philly R&B group Boyz II Men was honored with their own street: Boyz II Men Boulevard, located on Broad Street between Christian and Carpenter Streets in South Philadelphia.
The group, made up of Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman, is the best-selling R&B group of all time with 64 million albums sold worldwide. They have four Grammy Awards to their name, nine American Music Awards, nine Soul Train Awards, three Billboard Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and so much more.
Some of their hits include “End of the Road,” “On Bended Knee,” “I’ll Make Love to You,” “Water Runs Dry” and “One Sweet Day” with Mariah Carey.
Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and Councilman Mark Squilla sponsored the resolution to rename this portion of Broad Street Boyz II Men Boulevard.
Boyz II Men was in attendance at the dedication ceremony this past weekend in addition to Councilmen Johnson and Squilla, City Representative Sheila Hess, President & CEO of Welcome America, Inc. Jeff Guaracino, Regional President of Live Nation Philadelphia Geoff Gordon, NBC10 and Telemundo62 President & General Manager Ric Harris, Wells Fargo Greater Philadelphia/DE Central Area President, SVP Anthony A. Rosado and Principal of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Joanne Beaver.
There was also a tribute performance by CAPA’s choir and band at the ceremony.
The dedication ceremony is a preview of what’s to come at Wawa Welcome America. The theme for 2017 is “Everyone is a History Maker” and Boyz II Men will be honored again as Philly history-makers for their musical and philanthropic achievements at the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony, taking place on July 4 at 10:00 a.m. at Independence Hall.
The group will also appear at the concert and fireworks on the Parkway later that evening at 7:00 p.m., which will also feature a performance from another R&B legend — Mary J. Blige.
