1 The quarterbacks: Three of a kind or a full house?
The Eagles seem content to let this play out, and why not? Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb are both under contract for another season, and they own a team option on Michael Vick. Which means there’s a good chance they’ll keep all three. In fact, Andy Reid indicated as much in his end-of-year press conference. “We like Kevin Kolb and we like Michael Vick and we like Donovan McNabb,” Reid said. “I think it’s a pretty good situation to be in.” That is, until McNabb demands a contract extension. Remember, the team gave him a hefty raise last offseason, but didn’t up his years. Keep an eye on how New England handles Tom Brady and what Seattle does with Matt Hasselbeck, two other franchise quarterbacks playing in contract years.
2 Safety dance
The Eagles fully expected Quintin Demps to fill the safety void left by Brian Dawkins. When his attitude — and work ethic — put him in Reid’s doghouse, the team scrambled. First, they signed Sean Jones. When that didn’t work, they moved rookie Macho Harris over. But Jones and Harris proved they were more effective in nickel and dime packages. So, now what? If the Birds go to free agency, Green Bay’s Nick Collins is the best fit. However, he’s a restricted free agent and would command big money on the open market. Other names to watch: Antoine Bethea, Indianapolis; Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh; Gerald Sensabaugh, Dallas.
3 Bye bye B-West?
With Brian Westbrook on the shelf, LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver carried the running duties down the stretch. The Eagles posted a 6-1 record until No. 36 returned on Dec. 27. In last week’s playoff loss, Westbrook was rarely seen. His lone play — a 27-yard screen pass — was more a credit to the blocking scheme. The Eagles will probably bring Westbrook into camp, and then cut ties with him.
