Two more priests in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia have been deemed “not suitable for the ministry” following reports of sexual abuse, the Archdiocese announced Sunday.
Monsignor George J. Mazzotta, 73, was removed after the Archdiocese substantiated an allegation it received in May 2010 that he sexually abused a minor. Mazzotta most recently served at Stella Maris Parish in Philadelphia and Saint Madeline Parish in Ridley Park. Ordained in 1966, he also served at several schools.
In the second case, Monsignor Hugh P. Campbell, 77, a retired priest, self-reported sexual abuse of a minor in December 2011, at which time he was placed on administrative leave. He most recently served at Saint Maximilian Kolbe Parish in West Chester. Campbell, ordained in 1961, had also served at several schools in the area.
Both men have agreed to accept a “supervised life of prayer and penance,” according to the Archdiocese.
Earlier this month, Archbishop Charles Chaput announced resolutions in eight of the 26 cases of priests on administrative leave as a result of a February 2011 grand jury report. Neither Mazzotta or Campbell are connected to that announcement.
Additionally, Monsignor William Lynn and Rev. James Brennan are on trial. Lynn is accused of protecting predator priests and Brennan is accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy at his home. Another priest, Rev. Edward Avery, has pleaded guilty in that case.
