UPDATED Marine Unit Continues Search for Woman in Schuylkill River

The Police Marine Unit is continuing to search for a woman who was driving a silver or gray sedan southbound on Ferry Road around 4:15 p.m. when she crossed Kelly Drive, slammed through a wall and plunged into the Schuylkill River.

Police said that, according to witnesses, the vehicle became submerged in the water. About five seconds later, a black female in her mid-40s was able to get out of the car and was observed screaming for help.

The woman made it to the third bridge pillar, but was swept away by the current, strengthened by a record amount of rain in the past few months.

Approximately 10 seconds after her vehicle nosedived into the river, the woman disappeared.

Police said that the current is so strong, the Marine Unit is having trouble retrieving the woman’s vehicle. Right now, they are focused on finding the victim.

Police are unsure of the woman’s identity or whether anyone else was in the vehicle. The Aviation Unit was also on the scene to assist in the search.
