Veteran Philly police officer dies after collapsing in courthouse

A Philadelphia police officer found unconscious Tuesday morning in a Center City courthouse died after suffering a “massive heart attack,” police said.

The officer, identified as 41-year-old Douglas Bamberger, was found collapsed on the ninth floor of the Criminal Justice Center around 7:40 a.m. He was rushed to Hahnemann Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:42 a.m.

He was a 16-year veteran of the force with two children.

“Commissioner Richard Ross extends his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and law enforcement family of Officer Bamberger,” the police department said in a statement.

Another worker in thecourthouse called 911 after discovering the officer unconscious. Members of the Sheriff’s Department attempted CPR until medical personnel arrived, to no avail.
