Vick edges out Nutter for commencement honor

Two seasons ago, Michael Vick was a third-string quarterback. In February, he was given the keys to Dallas in a private ceremony. Now, he’s set to be a commencement speaker.

Vick was picked over Mayor Michael Nutter in a poll among students conducted by the Camelot Schools. The graduation ceremony will be held next month at the Kimmel Center, although the exact date is being withheld in an effort to curb protests.

Camelot is a group of five educational institutions that works with the Philadelphia School District to help students with emotional issues.

“These students may have made a mistake along the way, but they turned it around,” Vick said in a statement. “They did the right thing and finished school. I am honored to be speaking at their commencement.”

Vick enjoyed a meteoric rise back to glory last season, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors and was a candidate for the league’s MVP award.
