VIDEO: Police seek good Samaritan killer in La Familia corner store shootout

Police are looking for a person of interest in a shooting at La Familia Supermarket on the 3300 block of North 5th Street that killed a good Samaritan and injured two others last night.

Edward Friedland, 26, allegedly entered the store and attempted to rob the owner at gunpoint around 8:30 p.m., police said. The store owner was also armed and a shootout ensued, wounding Friedland in the chest and the shop owner in the stomach.

When Friedland fled, a friend of the store owner, identified today as Rafael Delvalle, 26, pursued him. A third man, who picked up Friedland’s handgun after the struggle, also followed. The unidentified man allegedly shot and killed Delvalle execution-style at 5th Street and Sedgley Avenue during the chase, police said.

Police describe the suspect as a thin Hispanic male, aged 18 to 25, wearing a blue baseball cap and white t-shirt. He can be seen on store surveillance footage entering and leaving several times before the robbery.

Both Friedland and the store owner are hospitalized but expected to survive. Charges are pending.

Police are asking anyone with information about the suspect to call 215-686-TIPS (8477) or to contact the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334.
