Vinny Curry and the Eagles, a match made in heaven

Vinny Curry didn’t want the cameras in his home before his name was called out in last week’s NFL draft. The Eagles’ second-round draft pick had something to hide.

Nothing sinister, just a little embarrassing. You see, Curry’s room is decorated with Eagles memorabilia.

“The NFL Network and all these TV stations wanted to come to my house and I said no because I wasn’t taking this stuff down,” Curry said. “It would have been my last day as an Eagle fan if I would’ve gone to a different team, but I wouldn’t have taken it down.”

Curry was raised an Eagles fan in Neptune, N.J. He said he used to rush home after Pop Warner games to see his boys play. Now Curry, a kid who grew up idolizing Ricky Watters and hating the Cowboys and Giants, is a proud member of the Philadelphia Eagles. He called his first day at the NovaCare Complex — last Saturday during Brian Dawkins’ retirement ceremony — the “greatest day of his life.”

“I wish my mother was alive to see me be an Eagle,” Curry said. “I’m a really positive guy and I want people in my hometown and all across the world to know that there is never a dream too big as long as you keep your mind on things, you put your blindfold on, and you stay positive and true to yourself, all things are possible.”

Curry was originally penciled in as a first-round pick in this draft. However, he slipped all the way to the second round, until the Birds took him with the 59th overall selection.

“It gives you a big chip on your shoulder,” he said. “I’m an underdog anyway, it don’t matter where I’m at. Everybody was expecting me to get dogged and not do as well, but in my heart, this is what I do and this is what I love.”

Curry even got a little advice from Dawkins.

“He said, ‘It’s a beautiful city and wonderful organization. Welcome to the family.'”

Scouting report

In Vinny Curry (6 feet 3 inches, 266 pounds), the Birds drafted first-round talent in the second round. He should make an immediate impact in Jim Washburn’s aggressive, pass-rushing

rotation.

Our take: Curry isn’t just a speed-end, he’s a legitimate playmaker. In addition to recording 11 sacks in 2011, he forced seven fumbles

Skills: Relentless and strong off the edge. Good closing speed, great hands.
