Was Josh Huff released by Eagles due to his troubling remarks?

The Eagles officially cut ties with Josh Huff Thursday morning after spending all day Wednesday telling members of the media the third year wide receiver would be with the team as usual when it plays the Giants Sunday.

“For us we felt based on the circumstances and based on the facts involved it was the best decision for our football team,” Eagles VP of football operations Howie Roseman said in a press conference about an hour after Huff’s release.

“We spent the last 48 hours making sure we had all the information and we didn’t rush to judgement.”

“What professional athlete doesn’t have a gun?” Huff asked when interviewed Wednesday, a day after he was arrested for possession of a gun that wasn’t registered in New Jersey, had six hollow-point bullets and was caught with under 50 grams of marijuana.

Huff went on to joke that he was “not Gilbert Arenas,” and was not bringing the gun to the NovaCare Center. He also said he had the deadly hollow-point bullets for “protection, period.”

The Eagles will likely call upon Bryce Treggs to assume Huff’s role as fourth wide receiver, and kickoff responsibilities will fall on rookie running back Wendell Smallwood, who has a kickoff return for a touchdown this season.

Huff was off to his best start yet, proving he was a reliable receiver catching a bevy of screen passes during seven games this season. He also had a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown.

“We all care about Josh Huff we care about all the players on our team, this decision was hard but we had to do what was right for the Philadelphia Eagles,” Roseman said. “It’s dissapointing that we have to stand up here and do this but we are trying to build something that lasts.”
