October brings a plethora of events around the city that urges Philadelphians to think pink and try to support the cause any way they can. To help, we’ve rounded up some ways to get information and support Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the city.

Self-Care & Self-Aware

On Saturday, Oct. 23, Lumos Yoga & Barre will be offering one of their yoga classes with an added incentive—a guided breast self-examination and information session. The donation-based class starts off with a soothing yet empowering vinyasa flow class led by Lumos instructor Alyssa Martin, and the examination and info session will follow, led by Board Certified Gynecologist Dr. Dana Shanis. This event is BYO Mat (or you can rent one through Lumos) and comes out to be $5-20 cash, with all proceeds benefit Living Beyond Breast Cancer. You can register for the class, which begins at 1 p.m. and will take place at Lumos, online.

Tour de City Fitness

City Fitness has teamed up with YSC Tour de Pink (the annual memorial bike ride) this month to raise both funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. The funds that they raise will go towards the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and educating young adults affected by breast cancer. For Tour de City Fitness, Philadelphians can head to any of these City Fitness locations (East Market, Logan Square, and Fishtown) on Oct. 17 to participate in an in-person shift cycling class for both members and non-members to ride in support of young adults affected by breast cancer. The Tour will run from noon to 1 p.m. and fitness clubs are encouraged to provide donations for the event with all proceeds benefitting YSC. Attendees should also wear pink to help support the cause. In addition to the three-club cycling event, City Fitness Philadelphia will also be selling pink City Fitness shirts, and for the duration of the month of October, a portion of the proceeds from sales of the pink shirts will go directly to the Young Survival Coalition. If you can’t make is this weekend, those interested in donating to the YSC can also do so online. As the release states, non-members of City Fitness are welcome but are required to show proof of vaccination for the event and are asked to arrive 20-30 minutes prior to the event to sign a waiver, show proof of full vaccination, and set up their bikes. You can find out more information and sign up online.

Sistahs of NCNW Virtual Breast Cancer Walk

If you’re more comfortable staying home and showing your support, you can do so with the Sistahs of NCNW Virtual Breast Cancer Walk, but there is also a way to still be there in person. As the official website states: You can safely walk with us as we walk 3-miles across the Ben Franklin Bridge this Saturday, Oct. 16. We will be strictly adhering to the CDC guidelines on outside recreation. Those walkers that choose to participate in a 3- mile walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge will receive a pink face mask. Walk registration starts at 9 a.m. Purchased event sweatshirts can be picked up at registration and in order to remain socially distant, all walkers will be assigned a start time. The cost ranges up to $35 and Philadelphians who are interested can register on Eventbrite.
