Five people are dead and three people are injured following at least six separate shootings and one stabbing over a particularly violent weekend.
Police found a man, 17, shot in the stomach and lying near Finley Playground on the 1000 block of East Hortler Street in the Stenton section of East Mount Airy around 11:10 p.m. Friday. He was rushed to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he died about an hour later.
A little over two hours later, police at G Street and East Allegheny Avenue in Kensington found a man lying on the sidewalk with a stab wound to the chest. He died at Temple University Hospital.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday night, officers on the 2500 block of Sartain Street near 12th and West Porter streets in South Philadelphia found a white Chrysler minivan parked on the block. Inside was a man, 28, who had been shot in the head multiple times. He died at Temple University Hospital.
Police responding to reports of a person with a gun on the 2700 block of Vare Avenue near the Schuylkill Expressway in the Southbrook Park section of South Philadelphia shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday found a man, 37, whose body was riddled with bullets. He was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Shortly before 1 a.m. this morning, officers received a report of a person with a gun at 4940 North Broad Street in Logan, where several financial businesses share space with three apartments, according to online property records. The found one man, 30, with a gunshot wound to the hip. Paramedics took him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he is in stable condition. A second man, 20, was also shot in the arm and taken to Einstein in a private vehicle. He is also in stable condition.
Police are looking for a five-foot-five to five-foot-seven-inch black man, aged 25 to 30, with a thin build and a goatee. He was armed with a black handgun, wearing a gray and black striped hoodie and jeans and possibly driving a blue 1995 Buick.
Officers responding to a radio call for a person with a gun inside a residence on the 1500 block of Federal Street in South Philadelphia about an hour later found a man, 22, lying inside the home with gunshot wounds to the side and upper back. He was rushed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he died about a half hour later.
Further investigation revealed that the victim was confronted by an unknown male, who opened fire, and that he ran inside the home and collapsed.
A man in his 20s was found shot in the groin and buttocks around 3:15 a.m. on a sidewalk of the 1200 block of West Cumberland Street in North Philadelphia. Paramedics rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Police have not released any of the victims’ identities or possible motives for their slayings. No arrests have yet been made in any of the incidents.
The deaths bring the number of homicides to 244 this year so far, a more than 10 percent jump from the number of victims on this day last year and a nearly 18 percent increase in killings compared to the same date in 2009.
