Woman freed from her toilet

A North Philadelphia woman was rescued after being trapped in her toilet for a few days, according to fire officials yesterday.

Friends and neighbors of the 93-year-old, who lives alone at the Tioga Presbyterian Apartments at 15th and Tioga streets, became alarmed when they were unable to reach her. One of those concerned neighbors called 911 around 11 a.m.

The fire department was able to get into the apartment about 30 minutes later and found that the woman had slid into the bowl of her toilet. She had been stuck for about two to three days, officials estimated.

The woman was taken to Temple Hospital with a piece of toilet still attached and is in stable condition after being treated for dehydration. ABC 6 reported last night that the woman actually had an emergency alarm cord in the bathroom that she could have pulled, but did not. The report said medical workers tested the alarm system, and it worked.
